Marches 7s
The 2013 Marches was without doubt a fantastic success with 32 schools from all over England and Wales providing a large crowd with a festival of rugby. The weather was dry but cold and the ground conditions were remarkable, as half of Wyeside was flooded on the previous week.

The general standard of rugby was very impressive and the crowd was entertained with some extremely competitive group games. The HCS ‘A’ squad performed well. They won all three group games, beating Cwm Rhymni, Solihull and Bristol Grammar, to qualify for the cup quarter finals. Worth produced an upset, beating last year’s winners, Coleg Sir Gar, 33-22 and then progressed into the cup final stages. HCS ‘B’ team also played to a high standard and although they lost all their games, they came close against Bro Morgannwg, losing 7-5.

The knockout stages produced some thrilling rugby. Millfield beat Llandovery 19-14 in extra time, King’s Worcester knocked out HCS in the cup and Sir Thomas Riches defeated Worth. The semi final of the cup produced a classic encounter, with King’s Worcester just doing enough to win 17-12 against Millfield. The second semi final was also close, with RGS Worcester winning 19-14 to set up an all Worcester final.

The ‘Plate’ final was between Colston’s and Sir Gar. Again, this was a close match with Sir Gar emerging as winners 24-21. The ‘PTA Bowl’ was also close, with Monmouth edging out Hartpury 14-12.

The cup final was the last game of a long day with RGS and King’s Worcester competing for the title. King’s continued their fantastic form and proved too strong for a hard working RGS side with King’s eventually winning 52-0. Congratulations to their players and staff for winning the 2013 Marches sevens.

The day was a fantastic reward for all the planning, hard work and effort from the committee. The marquee was a success and the feedback from guests has all been very positive.

I would like to thank the pupils and staff from the visiting schools, the Headmaster, the Marches Committee, Rob Goode, HCS staff, Garin Jenkins, the referees and the PTA for all their support and hard work.

Mr Richard Skyrme.
